What drew me to Nightmare PTA Moms was how unapologetically heightened and self-aware the material was. Beneath the thriller structure was a dark satire about social power, jealousy, insecurity, and the absurd lengths people will go to maintain control—even if that control exists inside something as seemingly harmless as a suburban PTA organization.
Tonally, the film became an especially interesting challenge because the script clearly embraced black comedy elements while still needing to function within the framework of a Lifetime thriller. My approach was to play the emotional reality seriously and let the humor emerge naturally from the escalating situations and increasingly outrageous behavior. The comedy came from the characters’ absolute commitment to the stakes, never from winking at the audience.
Shot in Clearwater and Dunedin, Florida, I wanted the film to embrace the polished beauty and brightness of the Gulf Coast while contrasting it with the darker emotional undercurrents hiding beneath the surface. Architecture became an important storytelling tool throughout the movie—particularly staircases, which evolved into recurring symbols of dominance, intimidation, and shifting power between characters. I leaned into exaggerated blocking, wide-angle lenses, and low tracking shots to heighten the sense of social absurdity and perceived power surrounding the villain.
I especially loved shaping the character of Vanessa, the PTA president at the center of the chaos. She viewed herself as the queen bee protecting her kingdom, and I worked closely with the performance, costumes, blocking, and camera movement to give her a constant sense of theatrical dominance and manipulation.
One of the most enjoyable discoveries during production was adding small “stinger” lines on set—sharp final moments of dialogue that often gave scenes an extra layer of humor, tension, or absurdity. Combined with the heightened visual style, larger ensemble cast, elaborate social events, and intentionally exaggerated tension, the film developed a tone that felt distinct from many traditional television thrillers.
What I’m most proud of is that the movie fully embraced its identity. It became a thriller willing to be stylish, ridiculous, psychologically observant, and entertaining all at once—and audiences genuinely seemed to enjoy the ride.
